Thank you for contacting me about renewing Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), also known as fast track authority. I appreciate hearing from you on this issue.
I believe that Congress has a very important role to play in trade policy, and fast track authority has prevented Congress from playing that role. Fast track authority would give a presidential administration the power to unilaterally negotiate trade deals without any meaningful input from Congress, and then Congress would have to vote on whatever the administration agreed to without the ability to make any changes. That’s why I voted against the fast track bill in the Senate in May, and again in June.
