Dear Mr. MaddMedic:

Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 367, Hearing Protection Act of 2017. Understanding your ideas and concerns helps me better represent you and the Second District of Minnesota. I value your comments and appreciate the opportunity to respond.

As you may know, on January 9, 2017, Congressman Jeff Duncan (SC-03), introduced H.R. 367. The Hearing Protection Act of 2017 amends the tax code to eliminate the $200 transfer tax on firearm silencers and suppressors, and it removes suppressors and silencers from the purview of the National Firearm Act and the federal transfer process. Silencers and suppressors would instead be subject to NICS background checks. This bill was referred to the House Ways and Means Committee and House Judiciary Committee where it awaits further review.

While I do not serve on the aforementioned committees, I do look forward to reviewing the committees’ findings on this bill. If the Hearing Protection Act of 2017 comes to a vote, I will consider it with your thoughts in mind.

Thank you for contacting me. As Congress debates solutions to the challenges facing our nation, I hope you will continue to share your thoughts and views with me. Should you have any further questions or comments about this or any legislative issue, please do not hesitate to contact me in my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 225-2271.
